This unit develops the skills and knowledge required to prepare samples and perform basic laboratory tests and measurements using standard methods and workplace procedures.
Students will learn how to:
interpret test requests and identify relevant hazards and control measures
prepare samples using appropriate procedures
set up equipment and complete pre-use, safety and calibration-status checks
perform basic tests and measurements accurately
record results and complete simple calculations using correct SI units and significant figures
recognise and report unusual or out-of-specification results
follow WHS requirements and use appropriate personal protective equipment
clean and store equipment and dispose of laboratory waste safely.
Students must demonstrate at least two different sample-preparation processes and perform at least three different basic tests or measurements using standard methods and procedures.

arrange site access and obtain the necessary clearances or permits
identify site hazards and follow WHS and environmental requirements
select, check and safely transport sampling equipment, containers and materials
collect representative samples using correct sampling procedures
prevent contamination and maintain sample integrity
label, preserve, store and transport samples correctly
record sampling information, site conditions and observations
maintain sample traceability and complete the required documentation
clean equipment, manage waste and leave the sampling site safe and secure.
