The importance of culturally aware and respectful practice

All workers undertaking work in health need foundation knowledge to inform their work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and co-workers and with clients and co-workers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. This foundation must be provided and assessed as part of a holistic approach to delivery and assessment of this qualification. Unit Descriptor:

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required for a dental assistant to assist the operator by preparing clients, equipment and materials for dental radiography, to protect themselves, the client, other members of the dental team and the public from the hazards associated with ionising radiation and to process and mount dental radiographs to diagnostic and quality assurance standards

All procedures are carried out in accordance with work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy


Application of the Unit:

This unit applies to dental assistants who process and assist with the production of dental radiographs for diagnostic and quality assurance purposes

It is a pre-requisite for the units:

  • HLTDA410D Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection in dental practice 
  • HLTDA411D Prepare to expose a prescribed dental radiographic image
  • HLTDA412D Produce a dental radiographic image

All procedures must be carried out in accordance with current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards and the policies and procedures of the health care establishment

All tasks must be carried out in accordance with State or Territory legislative requirements that affect work practices of the health care establishment and/or health care worker

 

Application of the Unit:

This unit is applicable to health care workers who are responsible for processing reusable instruments and equipment and maintaining associated environments in a health care facility

Application of this unit should be contextualised to reflect any specific workplace infection risks, hazards and associated infection control practices relating to specific workplace instruments and equipment in line with individual workplace policies and procedures
